Boy that's a good question. In many ways, legal RM is really a horse of
a different color, which is why we have our own textbook and our own
pre-conference. But, in some ways you can liken records management in
the private legal environment (law firms and corporate legal
departments) to records management in other professional, unregulated,
service industries such as, perhaps, architecture. I'm thinking of
professions where the practitioners organize themselves into
partnerships and where they are not regulated by federal, state or local
statute or regulation, only by professional codes of ethics. The fact
that the legal profession is not a "regulated industry" makes a world of
difference in how it conducts its own internal business, including
recordkeeping. There's a lot more that can be said on this subject, but
I'll let some of my colleagues chime in.

Whereas legal records managers can (and do) get a lot of value out of
going to a variety of programs at an annual conference, if you're not in
the legal profession you would probably get very little value out of
going to a legal-specific program. That being said, however, we toil in
the trenches of our own profession every day, and there are many of us
that can't get approval/funding to attend a costly conference that is
general rather than specific in nature.

Just out of curiosity........what type of topics would be more appealing
to the Legal ISG? Are they so specialized that the rest of us would
not
get something out of them?
