It sounds like we (those of us on the listserve) are becoming a bit
political here.... If so, I doubt that we will reach any consensus.

If I recall correctly, Carlin himself said he intended to resign, though not
until mid-1995.  Also, the "resignation" submitted by Carlin was not really
a resignation at all, but a notification that he would resign when the new
Archivist was confirmed.  At the rate it is going, Carlin will be right on
schedule.

So would you rather go for several months without an Archivist or have one
in place when Carlin steps down?  And if Carlin was going to step down
anyway, is a reason from the President the issue.  Hard as it might be to
believe, maybe he is taking preemptive action with regards to the issue.
That would certainly  be in line with other decisions made by the
administration.
