Dear colleagues,

I do not profess to have a high level of knowledge in respect to digital
colour file formats but I would strongly suggest caution in respect to the
use of .JPEG as the file format of choice for short or long term maintenance
of digital file format colour images.

I am cognisant of the growing use of DjVu in this area due to its apparent
excellent file compression characteristics as Bill J Roach appears to
strongly support.

I, like Bil Kellermann have a preference for .TIFF as a preferred file
format due to Bil's stated desirable characteristic that it will provide
exact color rendition.

I also have a strong preference to use STANDARDS in most applications here
applicable or available and I wish to bring to the attention of all the WC3
guidelines or even standards related to PNG (Portable Network Graphics) as
the preferred digital colour file format based on their statement as
follows:

PNG is an extensible file format for the lossless, portable, well-compressed
storage of raster images. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF and
can also replace many common uses of TIFF. Indexed-color, grayscale, and
truecolor images are supported, plus an optional alpha channel for
transparency. Sample depths range from 1 to 16 bits per component (up to 48
bit images for RGB, or 64 bit for RGBA).
Details are available @ http://www.w3.org/Graphics/PNG/ and also from the
Portable Network Graphics home page @ http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/
Enjoy!

Regards, Laurie
