Dean,

A former colleague, Larry Landis at the Oregon State University
Archives, has an extensive photograph collection on the web. He's also
done a lot of work with the Northwest Digital Archives project for
several years and should be a great resource. Tell him I said hello.

Subject: document imaging query
I'm working with a group of folks who want to convert approximately
350.000 photographic negatives to digital images. The images are to be
captured into a digital asset management repository and eventually
posted over the web to a community of interest. =20 =20
The images are mostly 8x10's. The photographic services group
anticipates doing the scans at 300 dpi, grayscale. . We're thinking
the per-image cost should include data-entry of caption information to
associate the negatives with metadata to establish the provenance and
significance of the collection and to provide data for indexing. =20

We are looking for anyone in the public arena who has some
experience with this king of project. We want to produce an estimate of
per-image costs for the scanning and the data entry, either separately
or combined. If anyone has experience or knows where to find
information on per-image costs for a backfile project as I've described
it, I'd appreciate hearing from from you. You can contact me off-list
if you like. I'm sure vendors will respond, but I'd especially like to
hear from Federal or state employees who have worked on imaging projects
