I know that in the jurisdiction where I live the election staff prints, and
displays, the register for each machine in the am (showing the zeroed
counts) and final counts at close of the polls.
There is a paper trail of person to the particular voting machine - as you
check in, the two-person team that cross-checks your name on the voter
rolls, (separate system) generates a paper record, then signed by the voter
(previously would have been a pre-printed card plucked from a box of cards,
one for each voter) and this is placed in an envelope attached to the
machine you use, by the staff person that escorts you to a voting machine.
This team also programs/validates your voter access card that you will
insert into the voting machine, and then return to another staff member as
you exit.
Now I don't know and have yet to find the retention period for this paper
record, but if it is for a reasonable period of time I hope they reconsider
the paper/printer used, as they are printed using a thermal process and I
know from experience that these can be easily damaged or destroyed by
exposure to heat - Just leave a thermal printed receipt in the bag with some
warm carry-out and see what happens!
Voter turnout in this area (Washington DC Metro) is reported heavy. I was
in line when our local precinct opened at 7:00 this morning and the line was
longer than usual.
