This struck a chord with me - I've been offered promotions in the past
(some with substantial pay increases), yet all of them entailed getting
me "out" of records, usually resulting in a cut to records as I moved
on. While I appreciate the offers, in most cases - in my opinion - I
would have been involved in areas less critical to good government than
records management, the move would have caused a deterioration in
records, and I have turned such offers down. 

 

I don't think I'm too unique in that (a) I didn't get into the public
sector to get rich and (b) I'm really passionate about being a public
servant, and the critical roll that records management plays in
government. I got into this field partially because it was so
underappreciated, and I thought I could help turn that around. I think
there are a lot of folks out there similar to me, that share these
values, in all age groups, especially the young. I think one opportunity
we miss in this profession (at least in the public sector) is tying
records management to ideals of good democratic government that can
inspire people, particularly in the areas of transparency, cultural
memory and efficiency (there are so many ways you can have your cake and
eat it too in records management!) The archival profession does this
better than we do, but the lower compensations levels indicate a
disconnect with good business backgrounds in many cases. I have to say I
often cringe when I hear archival presentations on cost justification,
etc....

Yes, I noticed that too.  This may also reflect that salaries do not

increase significantly overtime when you stay at one company.  This may
not

only restrict your development of new skills and knowledge, but minimize

your opportunities for promotions and salary increases.

 

This does not imply that bouncing around like a rubber ball is a good
career

strategy, but it is important to be able to assess your opportunities
and

leverage your knowledge and skills when new opportunities are available

Records Management functions generally do not have multiple levels of
job

positions.  In many companies, the Records Manager title can limit your

ability to be promoted and still function in the Records Management
arena.
