The Oregonian has posted today a compilation of articles related to
Nike's request for public records to the City of Beaverton, and its
response. To date, that response has cost the city an estimated $900K
(although the article at the following compilation contradicts a story
printed in the Oregonian by citing $890K - another example of the big Os
wonderful web site....):

Its an instructive story of public access, electronic records keeping,
and - I think - all too familiar disconnects between the various players
that resulted in an unfortunate turn of events for the city. My
sympathies go out to my colleagues in the city who have no doubt had to
deal with the fallout of this. My own county, too, has had its public
records problems, as the following audit shows (2nd link under the Audit
Reports Issued in 2006):

Only 67% of the public requests were successful in the audit, a finding
the county finds unacceptable. Note also the proposal for future audits
related to e-mail retention and how records can be retained and made
available electronically.
