Still Stuck in Books After All These Years
By JOANNE KAUFMAN
February 23, 2007; Page W11
Tucked in a corner of my desk drawer is a three-by-four-inch black box
with a silver lid containing 100 yellowing dry-gummed bookplates. The
image on them -- an hourglass atop a pile of books -- is set against a
black background with a cream-colored border. Laurel leaves wrap around
a scroll that proclaims "Books Span the Ages." Underneath the book
stack is another scroll reading "From the Library of." My name, middle
initial included, is printed in Garamond italics below. It's the last
box of a set of three, a back-to-school present from my mother when I
was eight years old.

To cope with spiraling prices, the Getty's curator coaxes others to
shop on his behalf
By JACOB HALE RUSSELL
February 24, 2007; Page P1
In 1984, Weston Naef helped lead the wealthy J. Paul Getty Museum in
Los Angeles on an unprecedented shopping spree. Under his guidance, the
museum bought up photographs by the crateful -- more than 15,000 in
all, including several major private collections -- spending about $20
million. Practically overnight, the Getty had one of the best
photography collections in the world. Museums around the country are
still catching up.
