Dear Nolene,
What you are describing are matter management systems. There are several
off-the-shelf options that tend to be clunky and expensive to implement.
Home grown modules tend to be more cost-effective and useful. I have
designed such systems in the past with success.
Matter management systems are where records and litigation hold management
converge. When an organization is on actual or constructive notice of
litigation or a conflict, the obligation to hold records from disposition is
triggered. In my view they have everything to do with records and
information management.
If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
Rick Wolf

This is not exactly records-related, but we seem to have quite a
contingent from law firms our there, I was hoping you could assist.
Our Corporate Legal department currently uses a combination of Excel
spreadsheets, Word docs and JD Edwards to collect all the data to manage
ongoing litigation. Aren't there off-the-shelf software programs that
manage that? Not sure it matters what types of cases, but we defend
mostly employment, contract and construction defect claims, and we
operate in 7 states. There's typically about 150 - 180 cases at any
given time.
The paralegal in our rather lean legal department has suggested they do
something, but is meeting some resistance (it may be internal politics
more than anything). I can sometimes be a bit more persuasive (although
some call it a pain in the ...) so I thought I'd look into a few
programs and see if I could help her out. Any recommendations on
programs I could review?
Nolene
