IT may not understand all the complexities of RM but it is definitely a
partner. Digital repositories are becoming more complex and IT is usually
your resource for understanding the complexities of requirements and making
sure they are met for your needs.

IT needs to be taught so they get a better understanding of what you are
facing and what you do. They understand technology and not necessarily the
challenges you face in implementing sound practices or those required by
Law.

No matter where RM resides IT is a consultant to you in all cases.

Should Not!

IT does not understand the complexity of RM requirements and want to
simplify them.
For example, you would never convince a IT Manager of Client based
E-mail Management solution.
Nine out of ten times he would go with the server based solution.
RM & IT should report to the same division Manager (Director of
Administration, COO or something like that.)
RM needs to work with the General Counsel and the IT Department like
other departments need to, but it is silly that RM needs to be under IT.
Additionally I want to point out that IT is losing a lot of cloud and
merging RM with IT would be like the merger between AOL and Time Warner
right before the .com bubble busted.

Would anyone like to put their 2 cents in on the following topic....

Why a document control/records management/knowledge management
function...

*...SHOULD NOT be placed under the information technology group???

*...SHOULD be placed under the information technology group???

Thanks for any input you may have.
