Controlled Language in Records and Information

This guideline will explore the advantages and disadvantages of using
controlled terminology in Records and Information Management (RIM) and
address the need to standardize terminology for understanding and use across
the enterprise.
Status: This guideline is in final review by the task force, and then will
go to final editing and publication. As a companion piece, a free brochure
entitled "Controlled Language in RIM Practice" was produced by this task

I have been told off list that "RK" stands for "Record Keeping (as in
the DIRKS manual)." This brings me to one of my concerns about our
industry. We seem to constantly invent or reinvent terminology rather
than standardize it. I realize that countries have independently
developed methodologies (and resulting terminology) over the years, but
in this day and age of internationalism (and ISO standards) we should be
migrating toward standard terms, not introducing or using non-standard
terms.
I am not singling out one particular country - I think all countries
have the same issues. I frequently encounter this localized terminology
issue within the U.S. as well as other countries when working with ISO
terminology standards development. For example - is "RK" a localized
term? Probably. Should we use it in place of a more international term
(as defined in ISO standards) such as "RM"? I don't believe we should.
I think we need to make a concerted effort within our countries to adopt
as much international terminology (and related definitions) as possible.
