I would like to add my $.02 regarding the General Counsel Roundtable. I
looked at it briefly and believe it can be a valuable tool. It's always
interesting to see "what others have decided".

Being from Target, one category caught my eye: Merchandise Vendor
Records. When I saw 10 years as retention, I thought "Holy Cow!!!"
Thankfully, the entry was supported by a specific citation which deals
with prescription drug marketing, which is a very small percentage of
(our) merchandise vendor records.

My concern is that I am constantly educating (OK, fighting) on what I
call "urban legends". You know, all those folks that have heard something
somewhere that requires that they keep records such and such a period of
time. Ask them to cite specifics and they rarely can. If they can, the
requirement has often been generalized or padded so that many more record
types or more years are added to that requirement. For a company the size
of Target, this has a big impact.

Despite the wiki's disclaimer that suitable professionals should be
consulted, not requiring specifics can easily give rise to more "urban
legends". I hope the wiki will be generously added to by wise individuals
who provide solid support for their entries.

And of course, these views are solely my own, and not the views of Target.

Respectfully,
Gretta Thorson
