Not to disagree but it is an actual retention period.  Some tapes or (media)
i.e. financial data may require retention periods of 8 years as established
by the entity.  That media is held offsite i.e Iron Mountain for that length
of time.  

This information should be documented and shared with RM to ensure of proper
disposal or destruction.  I am sure in a lot of cases RM may not be aware of
what is being maintained by IT and where.

I think it better to describe this period of time as their rotation period.
Some backups are incremental occurring every day with a full backup done
weekly. The weekly is maintained until the next weekly is done. the same can
be said for monthly or annual
