It's a sad state of affairs that has caused the seat of our government to 
be locked and secured from the general public. I used to enjoy visiting DC 
and being able to explore the nooks and crannies of the Capitol, the old 
Executive Office Building (as well as some of the other federal buildings) 
with fairly unfettered access. It is now a series of airport security 
checkpoints with little to no access to anything. It's not fun anymore, 
unless you want to experience the what we supposedly conquered when the 
Soviet Union collapsed.

.... In the past 
(say the 1970s) you would walk past The White House and the manned gates 
would be open at all hours.  Now those gates stay shut all the time unless 

people/vehicles are coming/going.  Just an observation of a life-long 
resident of the DC area.
