I thought that E-RECS subscribers would be interested to know that,
owing to tremendous interest, the New York State Office for Technology
has extended the deadline for submitting responses relating to its
Request for Public Comment (RFPC) relating to "electronic document"
creation, management, and preservation. If you are interested in
submitting comments as an individual or on behalf of an organization,
please note that responses are now due on: January 18, 2008 at 5:00 PM
EST. The RFPC is available at:
http://www.oft.state.ny.us/oftnews/erecords-study.htm

I thought that the information below would be of interest to members of
this listserv, and encourage anyone who wishes to do so to submit
comments. Subscribers who live or work in New York State will be
particularly interested, but we expect comments from throughout the
nation and the world.

New York State's Chief Information Officer, Dr. Melodie
Mayberry-Stewart, and the State Office for Technology (OFT) have just
issued a formal Request For Public Comment (RFPC) soliciting input
regarding the state's creation, management, and preservation of
"electronic documents." This RFPC is the result of recent
legislation (Chapter 477, Laws of 2007) directing the CIO to solicit the
input of state government entities, other stakeholders, and the general
public regarding how "electronic data can be created, maintained,
exchanged, and preserved by the state in a manner that encourages
appropriate government control, access, choice, interoperability, and
vendor neutrality."

Owing to your demonstrated interest in the management and preservation
of electronic government records, the New York State Archives, which has
been working with OFT to complete the study mandated by the legislation,
strongly encourages you to review the RFPC and submit your comments
regarding these matters to the CIO/State Office for Technology.

The first part of the RFPC consists of a brief questionnaire regarding
the creation, management, and preservation of electronic government
documents and provision of access to the information contained within
these documents. The second part consists of a series of highly
detailed questions regarding these matters.

You may answer as few or as many questions as you wish. However,
please note that the window for submitting comments is extremely short:
comments should be submitted to OFT no later than 5:00PM EST on December
28, 2007.

The RFPC is available at:
http://www.oft.state.ny.us/oftnews/erecords-study.htm

Yours very truly,
