<It almost waters down the Certification process if you can get

Bear in mind that earning a certificate is not the same as earning
certification. Two entirely different animals.

Doug,
Interesting discourse on this topic. Having been involved with both
organizations for many, many years, I certainly see your point. And at
the $1,050
cost for each certification, it seems to me that AIIM has arrived in the

education/certification industry and see it as a method to generate
significant cash
flow for AIIM

It almost waters down the Certification process if you can get certified
and
a whole bunch of things. The old saying, "jack of all trades, master of

none" might apply?

"Just a bit of additional information relating to AIIM Certificate
Programs is included herein. I am not opposed to anyone who has an
interest in pursuing them, but believe that it makes sense for those on
the listserv to understand the scope and the limitations of the
certificate programs. I've recommended some courses for some employees
within my own organization.

There are a several levels for each of the AIIM
certificates....practitioner, specialist and master. That is true for
the other AIIM segments for Business Process Management (BPM),
Enterprise Content Management (ECM), what AIIM refers to as Search IOA
(Information Organization and Access), and what AIIM refers to as
Enterprise Records Management. So, feasibly one might believe that
they
need as many as 15 certificates to complete a well-rounded curriculum
in
all areas, or perhaps at minimum 4 if one were to focus solely on the
Master level certificate.

Costs for the ECM course that one might attend are set at $ 1,050.00,
so
those interested in pursuing such certificates need to recognize the
costs associated with the courses. There are, of course, lower cost
options - obtaining course materials online, for example. But the "in
person" costs appear to be rather substantial.

Each certificate program appears to be narrowly focused on a specific
technology. I would not be surprised to see yet another set of
certificates issued for the management of instant messages, perhaps
another for the management of wikis and yet another for the management
of blogs - since all of them are directly related to records and
information management. As technologies change and proliferate, those
with the certificates may find them to have a shorter life span than
might be desired. I'm pretty certain that we will at least refer to
ECM
as something else one day, that we'll have additional technologies
introduced to manage technology, so if you opt for some AIIM programs,
my suggestion would be .... .take 'em when you need 'em, but don't
count
on 'em to be a long-term career boost.

I'm sure that others will disagree - feel free - but just wanted to
point to a few things that might bear some consideration.
