Brent gave a great reply to Joe's questions about barcodes. To add to
it my 2 cents, barcodes provide a simple way to get standard information
in a small space.......I was amazed when I first learned that they were
merely fonts!!

This topic triggered a thought for me about the RFID ad in the new IMJ -
having just seen the ad yesterday, it was fresh in my mind. In the ad,
the vision is of being able to track where files are in an office using
a remote device that is sort of like a gps for files. It also put me in
mind of how much I wish that "clapper" technology would be built into
objects like car keys, glasses, remote controls, and other things oft
misplaced.

Back to the original thought.....our profession is about organizing,
identifying, classifying, retrieving as well as "records retention" (my
most unfavorite way of referring to what I do). Thus, barcodes are
another useful tool in our toolkit.
