You should be able to feed the document into this:

And have it convert it to something you can use.

I have not yet personally tried a docx file conversion there so I can't
vouch for the quality of the conversion but my guess is it would be
fine.

which is not readable in versions of Word prior to Word 2007 (MS says
you can download a converter, but it didn't work for me).
