I am in the process of developing a series of training courses to be
deployed via our company intranet. Using the intranet is necessary since
we have locations in seven states and a lot of turnover in people who
are assigned records duties (all of our records coordinators are mainly
something else with records as "other duties"). I can still go to a
location for some one-on-one if it's needed, but to get the basic info
out to everyone, personal training would not be cost-effective.

I started out with PowerPoint and may continue to use that for simple
"How-To" presentations (How To ... fill out a transmittal, pack a box,
reconcile the friggin' %$#&@@! storage vendor's bill, etc). However, our
company has acquired a Learning Management System, Lectora, and I will
develop new training using that so that we can track progress and
compliance.

My niece is a specialist in corporate training and specializes in online
and sales training. She has given me some great insight. An important
thing to remember is that online training is a different animal than
classroom or even book learning. You can't simply take written material
and put it online. It must be interactive and the visuals and audio (if
available) must complement, but not duplicate, each other. Images must
be meaningful to the accompanying text ... they act as a sort of a
mnemonic device. I know that's not the right word, but the image to use
would be one that creates an association so that a person can visualize
the words. I guess it's almost like illustrating a story. The training
should also ask questions, encouraging the learner to think and work out
an answer.

To me, CBT has many advantages in today's world, but must be done in a
way that maximizes the use of the time of the person who is taking it.
I have taken some great CBT courses and some snoozers.
