There are currently two standards in place for document scanning related to
black and white office documents.
These are:
ANSI/AIIM MS44-1993 Recommended Practice for Quality Control of Image
Scanners
(Uses AIIM X441 AIIM Scanner Test Target - for use with AIIM MS44 or AIIM
X442 IEEE Facsimile Test Chart (IEEE 167A) - for use with AIIM MS44)
ISO 12653-1:2000 Electronic imaging -- Test target for the black-and-white
scanning of office documents -- Part 1: Characteristics
ISO 12653-2:2000 Electronic imaging -- Test target for the black-and-white
scanning of office documents -- Part 2: Method of use
These documents are available at www.aiim.org in the bookstore under
standards.
There are also two standards under preparation related to scanning.
One is ISO 29861 - Quality Control for color document scanners
And a second standard practice is under development in the AIIM C24
Electronic Imaging Committee. This document is to be a recommended
practice for scanning in a similar fashion to ANSI/AIIM MS 23 - Recommended
Practice for First Generation Microforms. This document has been a bible
for many in the micrographics committee and the intent of AIIM is to
prepare a similar one for document and film scanning.
I speak as a member of the AIIM standards board and leader of the US
delegation to ISO TC171 on these subjects.

Robert Breslawski
