Hi Jon, 

I recommend to my clients as short a period of time as they can get away
with. I can't imagine much value in a system snapshot more than 30 days old
(and that's all a backup is). If you can convince your organization to go
shorter than 30 days, that's even better. 

Make the backup, validate it, and then when the next one is made, recycle
the current one unless there's a legal or other hold preventing it. As soon
as the hold is lifted, get back to the steady state.
