Backup tapes used for the disaster recovery should typically not be kept for extended periods of time. Most companies fall within the range of 30-60 days retention, unless specific business and other issues exist that require an extended period of time.

There is absolutely no reason to keep backup tapes for longer duration as it not only conflicts with data retention policies but also provides a convenient data gold mine for discovery during litigation. Hence a shorter recycle time is optimal.

Also keep in mind that IT performs incremental backups as well, so we need to ensure that the incremental backup + baseline backup window is accounted for.

The other important thing to ensure that the backup data is recoverable. I read somewhere that the industry success rate for recovering data from backups is not always 100% and companies spend significant time and effort in creating and maintaining backup only to realize that the tapes were unreadable or there was a software glitch that prevented full recovery of the tape data.

Thanks

Subject: Back Up Tape Recycling Time

Hi all,

I'm working on the implementation of a Disaster Recovery (Back Up) Tapes Policy. Does anyone have any information (standards, personal opinion, experience) on how long tapes should be stored until they are recycled?

Thanks.

Jon Cohen
