Ok, have I missed something? Who is Mr. Vander Ark? And, perhaps Why do
we care to focus attention on him?

Why is it that we in this business, with its difficulties in gaining
respect and understanding as to what it is we do and the importance of
the role it plays in everyday life in this world constantly have to deal
with poor representation in the public eye? This gentleman, Steven
Vander Ark, has once again given the field or Library and Information
Sciences the classification of "geeky". The media's constant portrayal
of Mr. Vander Ark as some sort of groupie wannabee who is trying to
build off of another's success only perpetuates the belief in society
that those who choose these fields are quirky eccentrics that aren't
taken seriously and are fan club presidents that exist in these pretend
worlds cut off from the realities of society. This is of course my
opinion of this but, it is tough to make this profession appear as
legitimate as it is without these types of individuals popping up in the
media justifying and attempting to legitimize rather childish endeavors
that are meant simply for subtle entertainment and not meant to be taken
any further than the basic enjoyment of the book or movie.
