You can get a handheld microfiche viewer (such as the Indus 456-120 Hand
Held Microfiche Viewer)for about $100 bucks.

With careful use and clean surroundings you won't have any problems with
causing scratches and you can readily read frames from the reels in
order to get a sense of what types of documents are contained therein.

If the microfilm Seth is concerned about is showing symptoms of vinegar
syndrome, it certainly is silver-gelatin microfilm. In my experience,
silver-gelatin microfilm is MUCH more vulnerable to scratching than
diazo microfilm.

The wording of Seth's message implies there's only one copy of the
microfilm, so if there's any chance the microfilm images are important,
risk avoidance may be a serious consideration.

No offense taken - I should have clarified that the film I took to the
library were duplicates (originals sent to the State Archives). And now
you know just about everything I know about microfilm :)
