Direct duplication (contact printing) from silver-gelatin film to
silver-gelatin film results in a significant loss of image quality (both
resolution and contrast range).

With respect to Ginny's suggestion to duplicate the microfilm if it has
permanent retention and high value, there is a variant to duplicating
the film, which I believe is superior in several ways.

This is to produce from the microfilm a very high-quality gray-scale or
color digital image, and "printing" that image to silver-gelatin 35mm
microfilm, using a graphics computer output to microfilm recorder.

This provides you with a high-quality digital image AND a high-quality
preservation silver-gelatin 35mm microfilm.

Best regards.

Fred

Whichever you choose, it will be time consuming. You will need to know
the content of the film before you can determine the approach and cost
to preserve the film if it is necessary. If it does contain permanent
images, then you can consider duplicating the film to negative silver
rolls (on polyester base) or possibly converting the images to digital.
You then have to put the appropriate measures in place to preserve the
duplicated or converted images for the future.
