What they probably meant by "special" was that you just couldn't use
your PC or Mac to glean any data from the tapes. A statement meant to
try and allay public concern that the data was easily accesible.

Certainly anyone with access to your run of the mill IBM "big-iron"
could extract useful data from the tapes.

Which is why encryption should be a normal business practice.

and here is a very important part from that story that generally gets
ignored by the press when reporting about "lost tapes"

"an Iron Mountain representative says the trashed data requires special
software and computer equipment in order for it to be read. "

if that is the case then why the hue and cry for encrypting the data
whenever we read a story about lost tapes?
