Ahhh...The holy grail of document imaging...I hope somebody has it...or
is it a myth???

Imaging is not solution for ALL records and it can be an extremely
costly venture if the records need to be maintained in electronic form
for any length of time. You will face the ongoing cost of "refreshing"
your technology/hardware/software, purging/migrating of images, and
infrastructure issues that will occur over time. (e.g. PCs replacement,
new operating systems, etc.) Paybacks or ROI analysis usually only
factor a 5 year lifespan, however, many systems and the imaged records
have to be maintained longer, which means greater costs over time.

Subject: Criteria to determine best candidates for scanning...

Good afternoon,

Speaking of scanning... I'm working on developing criteria that should
be considered prior to determining whether a records series is a
candidate for scanning. I vaguely remember a resource I came across
somewhere that described such criteria, but cannot recall what it was.
I think it included things like records with longer retention
requirements (5 years or more) would be good candidates, and records
where digital access would be preferable to physical access and
handling, would also be a good scanning candidate. Does anyone remember
such a resource? It seems like there were 7-10 criteria identified on
this resource....

As usual, any and all comments areappreciated.

Thanks.

Earl
