Margie, this is the justification I use for the City. It's all true, and
I put my money where my mouth is: due to budget restrictions, the City
won't pay my way this year, so I'm paying the whole thing out of my own
pocket.

"The Department of Records is meeting its Charter mandate by
substantially upgrading its City-wide records management programs. The
annual conference of ARMA International is the largest and most
cost-effective records management conference in the United States, with
educational sessions that focus on business issues, technologies,
deploying solutions, records management fundamentals, and governance and
compliance issues (see conference agenda, attached, or URL
http://www.arma.org/conference/2008/index.cfm). All of these topics are
of special concern to records management in the City generally, and more
specifically to the Department of Records. The vendor exhibits (more
than 150 vendors) allow attendees to find the small vendors who offer
specialty goods and services and are hard to find. Education, getting
advice from other successful records managers, and developing vendor
lists, will help ensure the upgraded programs are successful and
cost-effective."

Anecdote: at the first ARMA conference I attended (2002 or 2003), I
attended a presentation on automated classification software, which was
given by a senior scientist at SAIC. It was a revelation, and I've been
carefully watching that field ever since, as it has enormous importance
in managing large volumes of electronic records.

Good luck, and hope to see you at the conference.

Fred

Hi - In about two hours I'm going to try to convince the head of my
department that sending me to the conference in October is a good idea
for this company. Quite a few of you have said that it's a great place
for beginners to learn how to be (at least) knowledgeable about how such
systems work. Any helpful hints/stories/anecdotes about benefits from
the conference? I need some ammunition. Thanks.
