Jesse,

Doug is right.  Unless we have a business reason to retain something
longer than the stated retention, or unless the retention allows us to
keep something beyond the "minimum" time, we must destroy.  I know this
from experience.  We had to provide records to Department of Justice.
Our records had to be sent through Department of the Army Legal office,
and I received an inquiry on why we had maintained some records longer
than our retention period.  I had to write an explanation, which was
simply, "we didn't follow our retention schedule".
