My organization is just beginning to look into SharePoint for various reasons, including RM functionality.  I don't know specifically how it compares to other RM software on the market, but I found this Microsoft page to be helpful as I was reading up on the subject:

We are also looking into utilizing SharePoint as a repository for various Notes applications and databases as we finish migrating from Notes to Exchange.  This is being investigated as an alternative to .net.
