Having worked at a university, I am in total agreement with Dick's points.
Albeit, I worked for a very well funded school, but its policies and
practices were such that made all of Dick's points truthful, especially
points 6, 7, and 8. In my experiences, all decisions were made by
committees which painfully slowed the gears of progress almost to a
standstill.
I don't want to sound sour on academia, so I'll add that I truly enjoyed
my work; especially when my work involved training and explaining records
management practices/principles to colleagues beyond the library system
and getting them excited (as much as one can be) about it.
