I am a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals
(IAPP) and I am a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP)
working at the University of Illinois. I am also a CRM. We do not have a
CPO for the campus. I received the article from the CIPP list before
publication. I also noted that RIM professionals were not mentioned but
I have to tell you that when I attend AIPP conferences I do not see my
RIM colleagues there. Deb Marshall and I are scheduled to present this
year but I have urged my RIM colleagues to attend the Washington
conference in March.
We have a stake in privacy that is unique. Many CIPPs are attorneys or
people who moved into privacy from the technical side. I think there is
a huge gap between RIM and the privacy profession. I urge everyone to
take a look at this group and consider your stake in privacy.
RIM professionals are exactly who should be CPOs and I am moving into
that role here. At lunch I hope to persuade the Campus Security Officer
to consider a CPO position (hint).

Are any of you familiar w/this association? They offer professional
privacy
certifications similar to the CRM. There is an article in the Chronicle
of
Higher Education, "A Wealth of Data, and Nobody in Charge,"
(http://chronicle.com/free/v55/i13/13a00103.htm) that argues for Chief
Privacy Officers (CPO) in Higher Ed that references this organization.
It
also explains "why privacy protection cannot be simply added to the
responsibilities of information technology departments" and that "what's
important, is that they [CPOs] get to report to somebody that matters."
However, w/no offense intended to any attorneys on the list, the article
speaks primarily w/CPO's that are also attorneys and seems to imply they
are
the best people for the job. It doesn't even mention records/info
management
or the fact that records/info mgmt professionals would also make
excellent
CPO's or that they already deal directly w/these issues on a day to day
basis. (Hmmm, sounds like some self-promotion is in order here.)
Anyway, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
