I agree with Larry. I have two of these - a 40 GB and a 160 GB drive that
are used to backup data and transfer files between desktop and laptops. The
40 GB is about 4 years old and the 160 GB is about 2-3 years old and they
are both humming along nicely. I have copies of Outlook.pst (1.5 GB) and
MyDocuments (13 GB) on the 40 GB Western Digital Drive (3/4"x 3" x 5") and
it accompanies me on all travel. If the Laptop falls out of the overhead
storage on the airlines and crashes to the aisle, I can just plug my data
into a rental laptop when I get to the destination and keep on working.

Subject: Re: thumb drives as backups?
While they're cheap, and relatively stable... I think I'd spend a bit more
on something like a Western Digital Passport drive.
Take a look at their website and you'll likely find reconditioned 8o-120gb
drives under $60. A new 320gb is only $130 AFAIK.
These are USB powered, so no need for a separate power transformer, and once
ejected, nothing inside moves so they're quite stable. They're about 3x5x.5
and weigh only ounces.
I have 2 of them, one used as a deep backup for my photos, videos, and
music. And my daughter uses one for all of her active library of music and
videos, and it's spinnin' just about 24/7/365 =)
