Trudy - I am involved with Kerry Blue Terrier rescue. You need to read your adoption agreements and also any agreement former owners sign that gives away their legal right to the dog(s).
 
What does your breed parent club say? Their corresponding secretary may have some thoughts as well. The Kerry Blue Terrier Foundation (www.kerryblues.org) has some very nice agreements and adoption forms on their website. Check those out.
