SAVE THE DATE!!! – Thursday, April 16, 2009

ARMA Gaithersburg ’s 11th Annual Spring Seminar!!
Rockville, Maryland - University of Maryland , Shady Gove Campus

Topic :  “The Three Pillars of Records Management: Compliance, Litigation and Operations”

Seminar Speaker – Julie Gable, CRM, CDIA, FAI
Ms. Gable is the President and founder of Gable Consulting LLC, an independent firm that specializes in practical compliance, litigation and operations-based strategies for managing electronic records, founded in 1989. Over 25 years in the Records and Information Management profession Ms. Gable will provide in-depth, real-world, practical content on compliance, legal and operations issues affecting public and private sector organizations.

Cost - $125 (will include continental breakfast, break food, lunch and all handouts)

Records management, once regarded as a custodial function, has changed dramatically.  Consider:

Corporate governance, privacy, and anti-terrorism requirements present RIM challenges for organizations in all industries, and industry-specific regulations require businesses to comply with routine retention, inspection and examination mandates.  Government is not exempt: rules governing financial disclosure and Freedom of Information Act requests apply to government entities as well

Changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure will greatly affect the way that electronically stored information is sought and used during litigation.  Companies are scrambling to develop electronic discovery policies that will position them to deal with new discovery rules.  But E-Discovery projects have gaps that only RIM can fill.

Analysts estimate that knowledge workers waste 30 to 40 percent of their time on non-productive, document-related tasks.  More and more, companies are seeking ways to relate records management to business processes so that retention and disposition become automatic without additional burden on the workforce

Today’s records live at the point where three compelling needs intersect.  Compliance, litigation and operations pose significant, costly risks to organizations and the officers who oversee them.  Records can either mitigate or worsen these risks, so it is no wonder that records management initiatives are front and center for Chief Information Officers, Chief Legal Officers, Chief Financial Officers and others.

This seminar provides in-depth, real-world, practical content on compliance, legal and operations issues affecting public and private sector organizations.  It provides an explanation of regulations and new legal rules, discussing how these affect records management. The program examines RIM from different organizational viewpoints and discusses how standards can be of use in resolving differences that arise among IT, Legal, Compliance, RIM and end users.

Attention then turns to exactly how records management program components must be fine-tuned to enable effective electronic records management.  The seminar reviews five major records management software products and discusses important differences – such as product architecture – that are not apparent at software demos.  The presentation concludes with a ten-step method for implementing electronic records management.

Attendees will receive a copy of all slides used in the presentation to aid in learning and to keep for future reference.

Seminar Content Highlights:

Review of specific regulations and their implications for RIM.  Regulations covered include: SOX, USA Patriot Act, PIPEDA, SEC, NASD, Basel II, GLB, FOIA, OMB 1234 and HIPAA.
Review of specific requirements of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and their implications for RIM.  We also examine what companies have done right and wrong with e-discovery, and how courts are interpreting the new rules.
A look at the constituencies involved in RIM: Legal, Compliance, Information Technology, Records Managers and End Users, and what each needs and expects – sometimes with surprising results.
Overview of records-related standards and how standards can be used in electronic records efforts.  Standards examined include: ISO 15489, ANSI/ARMA 9/2004, VERS, DIRKS, ISO TR 15801:2004, and others.
Review of five ERM software vendor offerings, including EMC/Documentum, IBM/FileNet, Oracle/Stellent, OpenText LiveLink RM, and CA/MDY.  Includes a discussion of product architecture and differences in approach.
A risk-based approach to prioritizing electronic records management applications.  How to identify which applications are worth the investment in time and money.
The ten critical steps for successful electronic records management implementation.
