No law firm experience here, but I did implement bar coding in a municipal
records center/archives (warehouse environment with over 10,000
cartons/boxes and growing/expanding), a while back and agree with Deb as to
the granularity.
We identified the room (there were rooms on 3 levels) row, shelf and bay
where each box was located.
If I were using the bar codes to inventory/track checked out items in an
office environment I would want to be able to identify where items were last
known to be. That is, do you, or would you consider, having staff
periodically search the office and monitor where files are located. Some
firms can scan files and the room (bar code each office/room) so they can
track where things are.
Just my thoughts this cold afternoon.
