1. Review the NIST guide on handling of CDs and DVDs at

2. Keep in mind that just because they are permanent and stored correctly
does not mean they will be readable in 5-10 years, primarily because of the
difficulties that will be associated after that time with a) finding
hardware to read them and b) finding software capable of reading the formats
stored on them. For the latter especially this can be mitigated by saving
your recordings in standardized file formats to the extent possible - if you
are referring to audio something like .wav or even .mp3; for video, .avi or
.mp4/.mpg; for textual documents either plaintext or ISO 32000-compliant PDF
files; for images TIFF or PDFs.
