What Blake described helps to distribute the weight across all of the stacks instead of one column---which means less chance of boxes being crushed.

We currently have a trailer in transit from our Eastern Division in
Maryland to our office in Phoenix. What the transport company did was
create a wood decking between the pallets on the bottom and the ones on
top to prevent the potential for crushing.
