From my experiences with vendors and internal practice, 5 tiers seems to
be the ideal. Number of boxes depends on area of the pallet and size of
the boxes. For cubic foot boxes, it's usually 5 or 7 per tier with each
tier alternating in arrangement to create brick wall appearance. This
technique keeps the boxes from falling away from the pallet which can
happen if they are just stacked in columns.
Blake's suggestion is great, and one I have asked vendors (who its seems
don't service Safeway) about since they never double stack and are
reluctant to go 6 or 7 tiers high.

...but how many boxes, what length trailer and total weight
involved?
How many boxes did you have stacked on each pallet?
