or vice-versa, seeing as confidentiality/privacy/trade secrets/intellectual
property/classification issues arise after items are received, once you
determine what they're related to.

And what about legal holds?

What if you store e-mail on a server , but its also copied to a RAID or
backed up to a tape or other media form... how do you isolate the media
where it may be included to ensure you don't face sanctions for spoliation?
How does your ESI data map account for this?

What if your email archiving application performs data deduplication and you
can't tell if the copy that was automatically identified as a 90%
possibility of an exact duplicate was deleted after the hold was placed?

Or if your policy for 'archiving' e-mails involves storing in PST formats
which are not only unsearchable but involve a loss of certain header
information and other characteristics?

And what if employees made copies or printed it?

=)   And then, you cross the International Date Line....
