Hugh makes good sense, but there are other things to consider.  Otpical technology is a good altenative to read the text; you just don't get as much packing density. So, why would anyone care about storing natural-language text? 

It means that you can store the "original" for just about forever. In whatever technology future that comes, our natural language will be scannable into it. Maybe in 10 years--given the high rate of IT changes--we won't want to use digital but something else, which of course is not compatible with digital. So, you pull up your files from Norsam and scan them and you're off to the races.
