It depends on the type of construction company as others have noted. Your
friend should check with other construction companies, large, small,
commercial and residential, and find out what the statutes and common
practices are in their state - and could perhaps finagle a retention schedule
from them. I work for a large commercial architecture firm and the retention
varies by the type of project (whether an interior design project or an entire
building or campus), the drawing type, and the construction discipline, to
name a few. For buildings, the final set of construction drawings is retained
for the life of the building. Retention on phases of a project, or a tenant
improvement project, is 10 years.
