Check out www.shelftagsupply.com -- warehouse signage and tagging -- magnetic, adhesive, barcoded, etc.

Last time around when we needed to tag shelving we printed on laser printer, had our print shop laminate, cut with paper cutter to size, and stuck magnetic strip on the back. Works fairly well. Sometimes rubs off when we brush up against it, but sticks right back. Mag strip from the office supply catalog was the most expensive part of the project.
