"Elmer Gantry" (Burt Lancaster)is notorious among film lovers because
when Sister Falconer's (Jean Simmons) revival tent goes up in flames in
the final scene, the fire was fueled by numerous movies on nitrate stock
that are now, of course, lost forever.

Have you tried searching the archives of AMIA-L, the AMIA (Association
of
Moving Image Archivists) listserv, and/or asking this question there?
