No dice - even taking their position at its face value, when the
subpoena, Open Records Act, FERPA request, etc. comes in they will
have no choice but to "compile" the records and produce them.

That's not even a close one and there are many, many HE records
managers, lawyers, and even IT staff that would be happy to confirm
that. If I were in a more cantankerous mood (and had the time) *I*
might even do that just to prove the point.

I'll leave the political non sequitur alone.
