One thing is pretty clear to me is that shorter retention schedules are generally better than longer ones. Take accounting records -- do you really need more than three items in your schedule: (a) General ledger; (b) accounting evidence, audits, etc.; and (c) subsidiary documents used to compile a and b. There may be some exceptions to this but I think it makes more sense to work with broad categories and manage by exception
