I agree with Pilar about the depth and breadth of the conflict check depending on the age of your firm. In comparison, we've been around for less than her firm's 80 years, and recently undertook a year-long project (recently concluded) that went through all of our current and former databases (electronic and paper, going back about 30 years) to update our conflict of interest database.  We do keep all matter information in the database, but only search client names during conflict reporting.  Like I said before, matter information is collateral information should we get a hit on a client name.

We run our conflict reports on not only client names, but all parties, as well as text within matter names and matter descriptions.  Since our firm has been in business for 80 years -- and data hasn't always been entered consistently -- it's surprising how many "hits" we get that were never entered as parties.
