Gary, I believe you were a hustler and worker as a kid; likely very
self-sufficient. I remember the Grit publication. A kid from an
"underfinanced" family that lived east of our ranch used to stop by our
place on his way to a little town to the south of us to sell these
newspapers there. Dad always bought one from him. Not only that, he
instructed us to buy one if he was not around when John stopped by.
Bought garden seeds from him too.

Some more OT...; that family was one of my first lessons in helping
each other out. Society would later term it charity; I believe my
parents viewed it a little different. That particular family had 9
kids and lived in an old, one-room schoolhouse off the beaten path. The
father was a preacher, the mother took care of the family and their
garden. They had excellent values, and were always scrubbed and wore
clean clothes...; which were usually old and patched. We had 18,000
acres and usually the herd was from 7,000 to 9,000 cattle; 20 year-round
cowboys, etc. My folks would have a ranch BBQ monthly, mostly for my
family and the cowboys, but Dad would invite that family every time. He
and Mom would discreetly send them home with big platters of meat too.
I can remember the kerosene fuel oil driver delivering to our house one
time, and Dad sent the driver over to the other family's house to
deliver a couple hundred gallons to them; he had me ride with the driver
to show him where John lived. I was probably 6 or so at the time.

I never thought about it much at the time; just the way life was.

Best regards, Steve

Anybody remember this newspaper? I used to deliver it as a kid.
