We had a similar event a few months ago and it went very well. We went
the route of making it a competition and awarding a prize. (Example:
Office with most purged (according to retention schedules) wins. Etc,
etc, etc.) Circulating an e-mail memo about the winners after the fact
was also very well received. We also did a lot of PR about the
competition. I was really surprised about how excited the departments
got about the event... We billed it as a "Spring Cleaning" day.
