John,
I did a similar event and offered prizes to those who discarded the most (appropriately) by weight.
One group actually discarded 500 pounds of paper that they had squirreled away in a misguided attempt to cya. The new boss discovered the stash and had my group review it for retention, et al.
It did give folks a better awareness of records, and what they were keeping.

Subject: [RM] Cleanup days
We want to make this a fun day hoping that by doing this, most staff will
participate. Off hand, we will have a pizza lunch, have prizes for
clean desks, and prizes for those who store material into our ERMS. Have
any of you done this before using a similar approach and able to share any
thoughts or ideas as to how to make this work?
